The CMN regional was AWESOME!! My friend and I were so happy to learn so much from Eve Kodiak and Ellen Allard. What new ideas and skills to explore!!! The preschool setting in Canton was great and the company even better. I connected with LOTS of old music friends!

Mid-Atlantic
On April 9, 2017,  The Children's Music Network Mid-Atlantic Region held a Tribute Luncheon at El Golfo Restaurant n Silver Spring, MD, honoring the musical duo Cathy Fink and marcy Marxer. In a warm, informal setting, these children’s and family music trailblazers generously shared stories and advice gleaned from their 25 years of live performances and 20 award winning recordings. We were all thrilled to have an opportunity to personally express our admiration and gratitude for all they’ve done. It was, of course, also wonderful to hear them sing for us ("It’s Better When We Sing It Together”) and a pleasure to sing to them.

This special event was organized by Devin Walker with help from his CMN Mid-Atlantic Co-Coordinator, David C. Perry.  For more details and pictures of this very special event, check out this Facebook Photo Album:

Cathy and Marcy were very appreciative of this recognition and for all the work CMN is doing in the children’s music industry. So much so that they volunteered to host a Song Swap at their home with CMN members and other children artists later this year, whereby each artist should write and perform one new song for the group for immediate feedback and critique. We will share the details as plans are finalized.

Pool Party, Song Swap & Potluck

On Saturday, July 30th, 2016 CMN Mid-Atlantic members and their families gathered at the lovely home Janet Sclaroff in Cherry Hill, NJ, for a Pool Party / Song Swap / Potluck Dinner. The weather gods smiled upon us and provided plenty of time for swimming, splashing, diving and water frisbee before rain clouds moved in late afternoon.

Then it was time to eat, drink and and be merry, chowing down on scrumptious burgers and chicken plus an array of salads and other miscellaneous munchies. The day was rounded out with a song circle featuring a wide variety of wonderful songs, original and old favorites, from silly to sublime, that had everyone singing and playing along.

Special thanks to Janet for being the perennial hostess-with-the mostest – and a big wet hug to Marsha Goodman-Wood for journeying all the way from Washington, DC, with her hubby and three kids to be part of the fun.

CMN "Here Comes Summer!" Kids Art & Music Festival (+ Pool Party)

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, a dozen or so members of The Children's Music Network Mid-Atlantic Region provided more than four hours of music for the “Here Comes Summer!” Kids Art & Music Festival at The Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill, NJ. In celebration of the first weekend of summer – and the museum’s 21st birthday – we performed two sets on an outdoor stage and then moved into their indoor theater for the final set of the day. The museum was thrilled to have us as part of the festivities and expressed their gratitude with a nice financial contribution to CMN.

Afterwards, joined by other CMNers who weren’t at the Festival, we gathered at the nearby home of Janet Sclaroff for a Pool Party / Potluck / Sing-Along. As you can imagine, a warm and wonderful time was had by all. What a glorious way to kick off the summer!

WORKSHOP DDESCRIPTIONS

Debby Stratton & Diana Kane: The Arts- An integral part of every child's’ education

This workshop conducted by Debby Stratton M.Ed. and Diana Kane M.Ed. is a continuation of the keynote. It will expand on the keynote message by discussing definitions of the creative arts, how different art forms can be effective in different situations as well as examples of various creative arts activities and how they can be used to influence children’s lives. There will be a big emphasis on music: song choice, singing with children, and children’s flexibility of picking the songs they sing and when they sing.

Jackson Gillman- Flak Happens

This will be a two-part workshop, starting with Feng-Shui - how best to create a performance-friendly setting.  And when all the ounces of prevention fail, Flak Happens. UCO's (Unidentified Crawling Objects +/or Under-Chaperoned Overexuberants), PA interruptions, technical disasters, firedrills, - you name it - these performance curveballs are inevitable.  Some can be ignored but others need to be dealt with.  Workshop tips and exercises will be offered to better prepare us for handling all those Great Unexpectations.

Amy Conley Song Swap"STAND STRONG, CHILDREN"

Children face many issues these days-- gender identity, abuse, poverty, racism, sexism, bullying and more.   Share songs that help children stand strong for themselves or for others, songs about saying no to bullying or drugs, protecting friends, feeling empowered in their own gender identity, creating change, accepting diversity, etc.  We are all unique and children need courage to protect and celebrate their uniqueness.

Eve Kodiak: From Meltdown Prevention to Total Fun and Learning -  How to Add Effective Movement Integration to your Circle

We'll explore the brain-body connection between movement, thought and behavior - which is a lot simpler than it sounds! And put it into action with two brand-new Eve Kodiak songs that incorporate reflex and yoga movements: Wave to the Animals and Walking Walking Up and Down. We'll also talk about finding the integrative movements in the songs you bring, discuss your questions and troubleshoot your situations.

Tim Seston: Making Music: The Recycle Bin Band

In this hands on workshop we will work together in teams to make our own instruments out of recycled materials and form small bands. The goal will be to share our interests and knowledge as we learn how easy it can be to make music in an elementary school or preschool setting.

Dorothy Cresswell-  Zipper Song Swap!

Let’s share our favorite zipper songs, songs that zip in a word or phrase but keep everything else the same.  These songs are great to get immediate (or almost immediate) participation from your audience to sing along.  Children “own” the song when they offer their ideas for fill-in-the-blank. They are great for pattern-building in the brain. Great for stretching vocabulary and concepts. They are fantastic  to build beginning reading skills and flow of phrases for beginning readers and to reinforce skills and flow for more advanced readers.

From Nancy Hershatter---The 2017 workshop at NEFFA was FABULOUS---- it featured the best of CMN--- the songs, the fun we have, the abundance of resources available to members, the spirit of sharing and cooperation that are our hallmarks. Families in attendance really GOT who we are, and everyone had a great time. Performers took turns round robin style, and each had time for 2 songs. Philip Alexander and all 3 of his wonderful kids, Sally Rogers, Lydia Adams Davis, Dorothy Cresswell, Kim Wallach and myself were the performers.

April 23, 2017  SONG SWAP In Los Gatos

Report from Carol Passovoy:

We had a good turn out of stalwart members and a couple of younger recruits of Pam Donkin, who are quite busy teaching and performing.  There were 14 of us all together although half are missing from the photo  below.

Everyone had a chance to share an original or favorite song and we still had time to munch and talk with individuals. Kathleen Virmani shared her process of creating a small xylophone which was duplicated to supply each girl in a girl scout troop her own instrument.  I included the songs of 2 great members who could not be with us:  Pam Donkin and Greta Peterson’s song “Walk Lightly on the Earth"  which Pam had posted last week, in honor of Earth Day, and “Don’t Let the Good Times Slip Away” by late, treasured member, Lisa Atkinson.  Another long time member who was unable to come, is Nancy Raven.  We noted that her 40 year career, as a singer, song-writer, teacher is being honored on June 10 at the Monterey Peninsula College.

Carol Passovoy and Kathleen Rushing are your No. Cal Coordinators for CMN!  They hope to organize some gatherings this next year in at least 3 different locations, making it convenient for our members to attend.

If you would like to suggest an idea for a gathering, or volunteer your home or appropriate venue, we would love to hear from you.  In the past we have had song swaps, workshops, concerts, and always a potluck including lots of Kale dishes from Nancy Schneidinger.

You can email or call either one of us with any ideas or suggestions.  It was so great meeting a few new members and lots of "old" members at the October Conference in Los Gatos where We Could Not Keep From Singing, what a great weekend that was!

Hope to hear from you soon, and go put that date on the calendar, right now!
Kathleen and Carol.
