Bio
At just twelve years old, Joey Music (born Joseph Anthony Diaz) is already carving out a name as one of the most exciting young voices in children’s and Latin jazz music. A gifted rapper, singer, and drummer, Joey has wowed audiences on some of the biggest stages in the country and shared the spotlight with jazz legends alike.
Joey is a featured vocalist on two albums that received Grammy consideration: Mister G and Jose V’s Ritmo Y Rima and Mister G and the Global Citizen’s Children of the World. He has twice performed for Houston’s Freedom Over Texas July 4th Celebration and made history at the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference as the youngest drummer and vocalist ever featured in the prime-time evening concert. In 2023, he headlined his own show, Joey’s Pop Up Party, at Houston’s iconic Miller Outdoor Theatre, bringing his infectious energy to thousands of fans.
As the youngest member of the award-winning Latin jazz youth ensemble Caliente—winners of DownBeat Magazine’s Best Latin Jazz Group—Joey raps, sings, and plays percussion alongside Houston’s top young musicians. He has also performed with the Houston Latin Jazz Orchestra, sitting in on drums and percussion as a special guest. His artistry has already placed him on stage with some of music’s greatest names, including:
Carl Allen, Oskar Cartaya, Ignacio Berroa, Jane Bunnett, Tia Fuller, Oscar Hernandez, Hubert Laws, Francisco Torres, Terell Stafford, Tony Succar, Nestor Torres, Humberto Ramírez, and Ray Vega.
But Joey’s journey began long before the big stages. From the time he was a baby, he was immersed in music—clapping out rhythms at marching band rehearsals, jamming with drumlines, and playing on his first drum set at just 12 months old. Growing up in the vibrant world of the Diaz Music Institute, founded by his father, Joey was surrounded by world-class musicians who became mentors and friends. Whether eating dessert with Jon Faddis, shooting hoops with jazz drum icon Carl Allen, hanging out with Victor Wooten, or trading stories with Richard Crain, Steve Bailey, John Clayton, and Mary Jo Papich, Joey soaked up the spirit of music as a way of life.
Now, Joey is stepping fully into the spotlight with his debut album, Say It Out Loud, It’s My Birthday!, available on all streaming platforms. Full of rhythm, joy, and his unique perspective as a young artist, the project marks the beginning of what promises to be a groundbreaking career.
Joey Music isn’t just a rising star—he’s the sound of a new generation.
